About The Book
Johnnie Calloway grew up in circumstances that most people only encounter in books — and even then, they close the cover and go back to their lives. He didn’t have that option. What happened to him happened, and it left marks that took years to understand.
His path through addiction was not a straight line. It was a decade of wrong turns, near misses, and the kind of losses that don’t announce themselves — they just accumulate until one day you look around and realize everything you cared about is gone.
Recovery, for Calloway, wasn’t a moment. It was a practice — something he had to choose every day, often badly, always imperfectly. Writing became part of that practice. Getting the story out of his head and onto the page was, he says, the first time he felt like he could actually look at it.
The Story I Almost Didn’t Survive is his first book. He is currently working on his second. He lives in the United States.
