Let’s Keep It Real

One afternoon after a noon twelve step meeting. A young man insisted to his sponsor, “Man we have got to do something about the one jerk that comes in here every day loaded and shares. Maybe we can make a rule, like if you are under the influence of anything you can’t share? What do you think Tom?” Old Tom smiled and said, “You better watch making rules in here Son, you might just rule yourself right out of a seat.”

One night after the 12 step meeting a young man walked up to Old Tom and said, “I have 12 white tags/chips and I just do not know what to do.” Old Tom simply stated, “Continue to use your drink/drug of choice because there is one thing it may do for you that the people in these rooms cannot.” Aghast the young man asked, “And what pray tell might that be?’ With a certain sadness in his eyes Tom almost whispered, “Enough of the stuff just might give you the willingness to listen to the people in these rooms. But the one thing that no one can give you is… willingness.”

On the way home from a meeting the aggravated young man in a variety of ways continued to ask, “How the hell did I end up addicted? Did I get it from my family? Is it some kind of God appointed punishment?” Finally exhausted from the badgering, Old Tom stated, “Damn Son it doesn’t matter how you get a car in a ditch, it is what you are going to do to get it out that counts.”

After the meeting on the importance of a positive attitude a new comer goes up to Old Tom and asks, “So Tom is your glass half empty or half full?” Thinking he knew the answer. Tom just smiled and said, “Well son I need more information.” Almost in shock the young man stammered, “What? What do you mean you need more information? Is your glass half empty or half full?” Still smiling, Tom replied, “Am I drinking? Or am I pouring? In and of itself a half a glass of water is just that HALF. It is what we do with it that makes it half empty or half full. Everything in life is neutral Son, it is what we do that gives it meaning.”

The Medallion
Three days before the night of his twelve step anniversary a sponsee goes to his sponsor and says, “Tom I have a real dilemma. I am supposed to get my three year medallion Friday and I am torn about what to do… I smoked a joint the other night and I do not know if I should get my medallion or not. Old Tom gently responds with a grin, “Well son that is quite simple. Did you feel sober after you smoked the joint? If you didn’t feel sober you need to leave that medallion alone. If you did, next time get better pot.”

Everyone in life carries two bags with them wherever they go; one bag full of bull crap one full of sugar. I accept this is so even with myself. ALL I ask is to let me know which is which. I do not want to put the bull crap on my kitchen counter and I do not want the sugar on my flowers.
